The fall of light and shadows doesn’t really make much sense in this one . I was experimenting with painting landscapes wet on wet whereas I normally work up layer by layer drying each before adding the next.
Despite the somewhat paradoxical lighting, I like this overall effect and enjoyed painting it and particularly like the bits of gum tree intruding from the top right. The inspiration was from from some of trees and scrub near the house but the composition is largely imaginary.
Painted in oil on 9″x12″ artists’ board. For a long time this sat at home, unsigned as I wasn’t completely satisfied with it. With the “Home & Away” exhibition starting in just over a week, I decided to rework it a little – especially in the foreground where I have changed the shape of the shadows and added some more detail. The earlier version is seen below. We also shortened the title from its original “Playing with Light and Shadow” – and I signed it.
SOLD August 2025 at my “Home & Away” exhibition at Bowral Art Gallery.
