Sunrise over Gundaroo Hills

This was painted early one morning as the sun was still behind the hills but already lighting up the clouds and taller trees. The grasses round here can get pretty yellowed off in a drier summer but this was late Autumn and we had a pretty damp season so everything was particularly green.

This was another of my four small experimental works playing with different block out techniques. In this the block out was pretty detailed in terms of hue and saturation but fairly loose in terms of painting detail. For this one I also opted to leave some of the more gestural block out strokes rather than developing them further. I think combination this gave the finished work a more flowing and expressive look with less of the finnicky detail I normally apply to the foreground grasses and trees.

Oil on board 9″x12″.
