This is based on a photo I took as we were travelling down the coast from Cadiz to Tarifa and had stopped to look at the Roman ruins at Baia Claudia. loved the greys suffusing the landscape from mountain and beach to sea and sky.
I was mainly working wet on wet and the biggest challenge was to keep the gestural style which worked so well in the back and middle grounds while providing some detail to the beach to give it scale and definition. I am really happy with how the surf and water draining away on the beach came out. The mountain really is that shape although I have very slightly exaggerated the height to bring out how it dominated the village below it. I have given it a couple of layers of matte varnish to increase pull back the colours a bit to suit the winter light.
